“Light Sleeping” Can Make You Fat!

Bed Time Sleeping Habits

We all have our little peculiarities when it comes to our bedtime routines don’t we? Some of us have a “thing” about not allowing our feet to poke out of the end of the duvet; others are very fussy about the type of sheets which they sleep on while still others have strict rules about the window dressings. Many people like their bedroom to have a certain amount of light and air coming in as they sleep and this in itself is just fine…as long as you’re not getting too much light!

Why Snacking Is Good For You

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Snacking…Its Not All That Bad

We often hear the phrase “cut out the snacks” when discussing a healthy diet and what it constitutes; but the jury is out on snacking and the good news is that it’s not all bad!

Of course we all have those days when a snack is unavoidable; perhaps you’ve been working late, haven’t had time to eat a proper meal, maybe you want to go to the gym or out for a drink with friends? In these instances we all fall prey to snacking…but is it all bad? Are there times when is a snack actually good for you?

The short answer to this is of course!

The choices we make when having a snack are vital; it’s all too easy to choose an extra-large bar of chocolate and a packet of fat-laden crisps…they’re tasty and fill a gap right? But the problems begin with this type of snack and when it becomes more than a habit but an addition.

eating healthy for your skinChoosing The Right Snacks

Choosing the right snacks is what makes snacking ok…that and the fact that allowing your blood sugars to drop dangerously low can affect your metabolism in a bad way. If you’re hungry then you should listen to your body and eat! Allowing yourself to go hungry can trick your body into thinking it’s in a famine situation and that makes it store up fat and calories.

The best things to go for are low fat, whole-foods such as :

  • unsalted peanuts
  • raw carrots
  • baby tomatoes
  • blueberries
  • natural yogurt
  • air popped popcorn

All of these snacks are not only tasty but also very healthy…they’re not laden with much apart from vitamins and minerals…and a sprinkling of antioxidants!

If you want something a little more filling then try a small block of cheese with some lettuce or apple, a slice of ham with a handful of grapes or a banana which is a really fantastic, high energy and portable snack.

Stave off the hunger pangs when you feel them and if you don’t feel quite so hungry when meal time finally rolls around then eat less! Don’t fill up on more food that isn’t needed. Always eat until you’re full and no more…the “clearing your plate” brigade have it wrong! This is especially important if you are eating a number of snacks during your day as overeating in any sense is never a good thing.

Consistency Is Important

Regular mealtimes are important for the body to function well; a body which knows when it’s going to be fed is a happy body. Although this is not easy for everyone to manage it is very important that you try to keep to regular mealtimes even if you do work long, changeable hours….and this is why snacks are so good.

If you’re at work and can’t stop for a meal, make sure that you have access to some of the healthy snacks mentioned above and your body will thank you for it. Combined with plenty of exercise and lots of water, you will find that this type of diet is a very good one and you won’t put on extra weight.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

6 Great Ways To Look Great Without Makeup

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Many men and women would agree that a flawless complexion which requires a lot of work and is something to be desired.

Women in particular will put many hours worth of time and a lot of money into producing a flawless look in the morning, by covering their faces with makeup. Concealer, eyeliner, mascara, blusher and bronzer will all be part of many women’s morning skin cover up regime.

Even men have been seen to wear concealer to help disguise uneven skin and blemishes. But is there a way to look good without having to put the slap on?

Here are some tips to getting your skin make up three and looking great, to benefit your health, your confidence and your wallet.

Drink Plenty Of Water

We have all heard that water is good for you, but how much do you really drink? You need to make sure that you have eight glasses of water every day so that your skin can keep hydrated. The problem with many people’s skin is that it is dry, needing motorisation and as a result produces extra sebum. Sebum can block pores and will cause spots and blemishes. By keeping your skin hydrated, you were able to avoid the zits and keep your skin looking fresh.

Get A Good Moisturiser

Linked to the above, getting a good moisturiser is really important. Both men and women should put moisturiser on before they go to sleep. Your skin is most absorbent as you sleep, so by putting it on before you go to bed, you are really doing your skin some good.

Sit Out In The Sun,

but only 20 minutes. Sitting out in the sun (wearing sun cream) is a good way to get vitamin D in your body, and to give your skin a healthy glow. Unfortunately, many people go overboard and sit in the sun for hours. In very intense sun, such as in the summer or in many foreign countries, just 20 min of exposure can give you sunburn, which is really very bad for your skin. However, if you sit out in the sun for just 20 min and then go inside, you can really give your skin a boost. Even sitting in the shade will do you some good. Not only will your skin love you for giving it some much-needed vitamin D, but you’ll start to see a healthy glow which means you can ditch the bronzer and blusher.

Stop Touching Your Face.

It may seem a strange one, but every time you touch your face, you are disturbing the many micro particles that make up this fragile area of your body. Every time you scratch it, pull at it, tug at it or pop a spot, you are really disrupting the skin which can cause you problems later down the line. So just stop touching it, and let it do its thing without your interference.

Exfoliate Once Per Week.

Exfoliating removes the dead cells from your face which leaves your skin looking fresh and radiant. This can leave your skin feeling and looking healthy which when you are looking to go make up free is a little bonus. Just make sure not to scrub too hard or use exfoliate too often as this can have an opposite effect, leaving your skin dry and irritated.

Look After Your Skin From Within

Its amazing just how a change of diet to clean healthy food and drinking at least 3 litres of water a day can have on your skin. Drinking water not only hydrates you but also flushes out any toxins – purifying your skin. Also make sure to get at least 8 hours of undeserved sleep as this is the time your body repairs itself leaving you looking fresh the next morning.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Makeup For Rosacea

If you suffer with rosacea then you will no doubt be aware that whilst there are treatments which can help to ease the symptoms of this skin condition, there is no permanent cure and there is nothing you can do to prevent symptoms from starting.  Using makeup is one option to help hide skin redness however women suffering from rosacea can find it difficult to find suitable cosmetics.  Here are some tips for how to choose and use make up when you have rosacea:

Clean & Moisturise

Before applying any make up onto your skin, ensure that you have used a cleanser and a moisturiser.  Choose the right products for your skin, you don’t want anything which is too harsh.

Oil-Free & Simple Make Up

If you have problem skin then you are going to want to avoid putting on too many products as this can often just aggravate skin further.  Keep the amount of make up your apply to a minimum and also ensure that any make up you do apply is oil-free to avoid clogging your pores.  Mineral make up is a great solution as it offers perfect coverage but doesn’t contain the ingredients which can often cause skin irritation.  There are even mineral powder formulas which have been created specifically to cover up redness in the skin.

Before trying out a new make up, always test it on a small patch of skin initially; the neck or the arm are good options.  Make sure that there is no irritation of the skin at all, before applying it to your face.

Go Green

No, we aren’t talking about environmentally!  A green-tinted base or primer is a perfect choice for people who suffer with rosacea; it visually corrects any redness and evens out skin tone.  Applying a primer also helps your make up to last longer so you don’t have to worry about reapplying whilst you are out and about.

Have the Right Tools

Anti-bacterial brushes are ideal for applying make up to skin and should avoid unnecessary clogging of pores.  Where possible, avoid using your fingers as the oils and bacteria can irritate skin and clog pores with dirt.

Whatever you do to your face, make sure you do it gently.  From washing to applying the make up with brushes, make sure that you do so softly to avoid exacerbating any irritation which will lead to more redness in the skin.

Extras

Try to avoid extra products such as blusher and lipstick.  As your skin already has a lot of colour, you may not need to use any blusher at all.  If you do feel like you want to wear blusher, apply it sparingly.  Likewise, when it comes to lipstick, opt for neutral colours which will compliment your skin, rather than highlighting any redness.

Why Do I Have Varicose Veins?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Causes Of Varicose Veins?

When blood flows through your veins, a tiny one way valve opens up to allow the blood to flow through and then closes which prevents any leakage and back flow. However sometimes the walls of the veins stretch causing them to lose their elasticity weakening the valves in the process. If this happens then blood will leak and a build up of blood will collect in the veins causing them to become swollen.

Although it is not always understood why the walls of the veins stretch there are a number of varying things that can increase your chance of developing varicose veins. These include:

Gender

Sorry women but you are more prone to varicose veins then your male counterparts. Why is this you ask? It is believed that female hormones can have a relaxing effect on the vein walls making them more susceptible to leakage.

Job

If your work requires you to stand for extensive amounts of time then this may increase your chances of getting varicose veins as blood circulation doesn’t flow as easily when you are stood for prolonged periods of time

Overweight

If you are overweight you are putting added pressure on your veins meaning they have to work a lot harder to keep the blood travelling around the body. This increased pressure can damage the valves causing varicose veins – sorry ladies but again overweight women are more susceptible to this then men.

Pregnancy

The increased blood supply that is attributed to becoming pregnant in order to support the growing baby puts added pressure on the veins. Also increased hormones cause the walls of the blood vessels to relax which also contributes to the condition. It’s not all bad news however as a lot of pregnant woman actually find that their veins considerably improve once the baby is born.

Age

As we get older our veins lose their elasticity meaning the values decrease in their ability to function.

Genetics

Some of you may just be unfortunate enough to have inherited a higher chance of developing the condition from a parent.

Natural Tips To Turn The Clock Back On Wrinkles

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Whether you have decided to grow old gracefully or want to try all the remedies under the sun, wrinkles are an inevitable sign of aging, and one which can be slowed down by taking good care of your skin.  The earlier you start, ultimately, the better.

Hydrate

Whilst it is, of course, important to keep your skin clean, over-washing can actually strip your skin of its natural oils and moisture which help to protect against wrinkles.  You should try to wash your face with soft water (if you live in an area with hard water, boiling it can help) or a mild lotion which can be made from products such as cucumber.  Rub the lotion gently into your face and then rinse away with lukewarm water and dab your face dry with a soft towel.

Face Masks

You can apply home made treatments to your face using things such as carrot or tomato juice.  Carrots contain a high content of vitamins A and B as well as a number of beneficial minerals.  It can be a great natural cleanser for your face as can a freshly squeezed tomato juice.  Leave either juice on your face for around 20 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water.

Other products found within your home can also be used to make a mask, such as yolk, almond oil, milk and lemon juice.  Mixing all these ingredients together can create a mask which is ideal for skin with larger pores.  Again, leave the mask for 20 minutes then rinse off with tepid water.

Honey is also an ideal ingredient to include in a face mask.  Honey is suitable for all skin types and will increase softness and flexibility of the skin which can assist in reducing fine lines.  You could try mixing a little bit of lemon juice in with your honey mask for increased effectiveness.

Food

Eating a balanced diet can also assist with the reduction of wrinkles.  Think of it as a whole body approach, the healthier your body, the healthier your skin will be.  Fruit and vegetables are naturally great as their antioxidant compounds help to keep skin looking radiant and younger.  Soy is also thought to help the skin heal any damage which has been caused from ultra-violet rays, in other words, the sun.  Fish is also a good food to include in your diet due to the level of protein and the omega 3 it contains.  Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid which can help keep your skin looking younger.

Additional Solutions

If you find that you have tried the natural approach and it isn’t getting the results you want, why not consider a professional approach?  Whilst this may bring to mind face lifts and chemical peels there are actually a fair few treatments which are non-invasive such as the green peel.  A green peel is a herbal treatment which only contains pure natural plant ingredients.  It increases blood circulation and enhances the regeneration of new skin cells and collagen fibre which can assist with the reduction of imperfections on the skin such as wrinkles.
