Stretch Marks: Why Do We Have Them – And How Do We Remove Them?

What are stretch marks? Frustrating! Irritating! Pesky! All of the above. These stripes or streaks of skin can be a source of discomfort – not physically, but not everyone is comfortable showing their stretch marks. What causes stretch marks, and more importantly, what can you do to remove them?

The Why

Stretch marks are aptly, if not creatively, named. They develop when the skin is stretched too quickly. The dermis tears, and under layers of skin show through. Now, skin is designed to stretch to accommodate growth; stretch marks occur when growth happens too rapidly.

This is why you’ll see them during puberty, pregnancy or when people gain or lose weight rapidly. Stretch marks may also be the result of certain medical conditions (e.g. Cushing’s Syndrome) or with long-term use of corticosteroids. They can appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks, thighs and/or the side between the ribs and hip.

When they first make their appearance, stretch marks can be raised and red, pink, purpose, red-brown or dark brown in colour. Eventually, they flatten and turn silvery.

The Why Do I Have to Put Up with Them?

You don’t! Today’s technological advances have enabled practitioners to help you remove stretch marks effectively. The best options:

Ultraformer HIFU: Through this revolutionary – and noninvasive – microneedling procedure, high intensity focused ultrasound energy is introduced to the lower layers of the dermis. Low level heat is generated, which stimulates the production and regeneration of collagen. This vital protein gives skin its resilience and can help eliminate stretch marks – as well as tighten and firm the skin.

Dermapen: Microneedling may sound intimidating – but it’s your stretch marks that ought to be afraid! This treatment creates miniscule “micro wounds” in the skin, promoting the development of collagen.

Infini: Infini combines microneedling with RF technology. Concentrated radio frequency is delivered to the target area, spurring the production of resiliency-giving collagen and elastin. The microneedles allow you to bypass the first layer and get to the dermis without traumatising the skin.

Which option is right for you? Talk to our expert team to learn how you can say goodbye to stretch marks.

How Fillers Can Transform Your Lips

Thanks to celebrities from the Jenners/Kardashians and Angelina Jolie to Chloe Ferry and Michelle Keegan, as well as countless Instagram pages, luscious lips have become the focus of intense attention – and desire. Lip injections have seen a tremendous rise in popularity, among people of all ages. How do they transform your lips?

Achieve the Look You Want

In the past, lip injections were typically only offered to those seeing changes in their face due to age. Today, that still applies, but more young people (primarily women) want the full look as well. Here’s what fillers can do:

  • Define your cupid’s bow. The two peaks and valley of your upper lip form your “cupid’s bow.” This is very subtle in some people;
  • fillers can be applied to specific areas (in this case, the peaks) rather than the entire lip to help you get that defined bow.
  • Help volumise and plump. You can opt for injections that create an all over look of plumpness and fullness.
  • Even out asymmetrical lips. No one’s perfect – but why not get a bit of help to get as close as possible! Symmetry is an important component of aesthetic beauty, and fillers help even out lips that, for example, appear fuller on one side.
  • Build volume at the sides of the lip. This gives your lips a more defined, pronounced appearance. It an also correct drooping or sagging in the corners.
  • Reverse an upside-down mouth. Turn that frown upside down! Injections can lift the corners of the mouth, creating a more open look.
  • Banish lines around the mouth. Marionette lines, smoker’s lines and other vertical lines can be treated effectively with lip fillers. Look years younger!

Want to make a change you could kiss yourself for? Enquire about lip fillers at your consultation!

Living with Endometriosis

You thought you had to live with painful periods, pelvic pain, cramping, pain during intercourse, pain associated with bowel movements or urination or excessive bleeding, fertility issues, bloating, fatigue, nausea and/or unwanted hair. You thought that was just the challenges associated with your period. Many women find out that, no, it is endometriosis.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition in which the endometrium, or the tissue that lines the uterus, grows in other areas, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The problem is that this tissue acts like normal uterine tissue. During the menstrual cycle, it breaks down and bleeds. But it has no exit point, so to speak. This tissue gets trapped. It can irritate healthy surrounding tissue or lead to the formation of cysts, scar tissue and adhesions.

Among the symptoms and side effects of endometriosis is fluctuation in hormone production, which can lead to excessive hair growth.

laser hair removal full body

full body laser hair removal in london

Our full body Laser hair removal package is one of the most popular laser and hair removal treatments in our London clinics, and for good reason. It results in a permanent reduction of unwanted hair of up to 90% and has a huge impact on our clients lives finally being hair free.

While many people select target areas (e.g. the upper lip, eyebrows, legs, etc.), Laser can be used effectively for the whole body for both women and increasingly men these days.

Full body works out at much better value too. If you add up the areas individually they would cost many times more then having full body.

What Areas Does Full Body Include?

If you are researching having full body laser hair removal done it is worth bearing in mind that not all companies that offer full body actually mean full body!.

The definition varies as what it included with full body. Some companies include the head and face whereas many do not. At Premier Laser full body means full body !

So everything from the top of your head to the tip of your toes is included!. No confusion. No small print. Just laser and a lot of it!.

Areas covered in a full body laser hair removal commonly include :

laser hair removal full body

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Laser hair removal for the full body takes between two to three hours per session. Although an experienced practitioner can get this down to around 90 minutes.

This also varies based on your gender, size and the amount of hair you wish to remove.

A man who is 6ft 5in weighing 110kg will take longer then a petite 50kg female who is 5 feet!.

Experienced practitioners make a difference

It is always good to ask about the experience of your practitioner as this makes a huge difference to your outcome. Not only saving you time every session but with your end results.

An experienced practitioner will be confident in adjusting laser settings to make sure your sessions are always effective. Taking into account your lifestyle how you have reacted to previous sessions and whether or not you have been on holiday and tanned etc.

Laser hair removal requires a good relationship between practitioner and client, especially when you are having full body as you will be spending a lot of time with the practitioner.

The client needs to communicate and give feedback so adjustments can be made if necessary with the laser strength or spot size, so the best results can be achieved over the course treatment.

WHEN WILL I ACHIEVE THE RESULTS I WANT?

Laser hair removal results depends on a few factors.

• Type of hair – thick coarse hairs v fine hairs
• Hormones – hormones affect hair growth
• Consistency – keeping to regular appointments

Some people experience excellent results after only 4 sessions, others may need over 10.

laser hair removal full body model

Are the results permanent?

Many clients experience up to 90% permanent hair loss after complete a course of laser hair removal treatment. This is a dramatic and huge impact on grooming habits and routines.

Occasional top up sessions may be required once a year or once every two years depending one the individual. Compare that with continuing to shave every few weeks or waxing.

WILL IT WORK ON MY COLOUR SKIN?

Laser hair removal technology has come a long way since it was first invented. The Candela Gentlemax Pro used at Premier Laser is the a state-of-the-art laser used in medical practices and hospitals worldwide. It can treat all skin types and tones from light to dark skin using its dual wavelength of Alexandrite and Nd:YAG.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

We usually recommend six to eight sessions, with a six week period in between. So the complete eight session package should take just under a year to complete if you attend all your sessions at 6 weeks intervals. With holidays , work, family and life getting in the way of appointments realistically one year from first to last treatment is a more accurate time frame.

If you need a package of 6 then you should complete all your sessions in 36-48 weeks depending you have not missed any.
For a package of 8 you will finish in 48-64 weeks. Most clients will experience up to a 90% reduction in permanent hair removal after they complete their course.

laser hair removal

IS IT WORTH IT ?

Is it worth it? That’s a personal choice: while it is a commitment in terms of the initial time, the results can free you from hours of grooming. Also after the initial cost there is nothing to pay long term so it really is best to think of laser hair removal as a long term investment in yourself that will pay off for years to come.

As mentioned the time saved will add up over the years and although it isn’t a financial cost, saving you time can be more valuable.

  • Imagine if you could hop in – and out – of the shower without shaving?
  • Or not having to get waxed every few weeks and go through the pain barrier as the waxy hairy strips are peeled of your bikini area…ouch !,
  • or being able to show off your newest outfits without waxing or wounds from razors gone wrong?
  • Facing the day with confidence – and without pesky unwanted hair?

In the long term, laser hair removal saves you time and money.

Another bonus too is it can help if you suffer from ingrown hairs or if other hair removal techniques irritate your skin (razor burn, anyone?).

4 benefits of having full body laser

1.Save money

When you add up the cost of shaving creams, razors, after-shave soothing gel, epilators, waxing… keeping your skin smooth can be a big investment.

With laser hair removal, you can get the results you want in just a few sessions. Imagine a permanent reduction in unwanted hair. It’s an attainable goal. We offer favourable pricing and even financing to make this an affordable one as well.

2.Save time

Just as costs add up, so too does the time you spend on grooming. Even with longer lasting treatments, such as waxing, you still have to commit to hair removal every few weeks. You can take back control of your schedule, shorten your showers – and you may shave (pun intended!) a few quid off your water bill too!

3.Save yourself from pesky ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs can cause discomfort and, in some cases, painful sores. They create little red bumps, similar in appearance to pimples. With laser hair treatment, you can eliminate these issues.

4.Save your sensitive skin from razor burn and nicks

Red, itchy, irritated skin, rash-like bumps and little cuts are often the price of shaving. Just say “no”!

HOW MUCH DOES FULL BODY LASER HAIR REMOVAL COST?

A lot of people are put off having full body laser laser hair removal due to the cost. Most companies offer financing to cover the costs of laser hair treatment.

This can bring it down to an affordable monthly cost sometimes around the same price as you would pay for your mobile phone, but unlike your mobile phone you wont be paying for ever…just 12 months.

How to Tell What Skin Type You Have

Are the cleansers, moisturisers and treatments you’ve been relying on for healthy, beautiful skin actually causing more problems than they are solving? They may be if you are using products that are not designed for your skin type. The obvious question, then, is: what type of skin do you have?

Know the Skin You’re In

A quick look at the most common skin types – and how you can tell which yours is:

Normal: Lucky! This skin is considered “well-balanced.” Sebum (an oily, lubricating secretion) and moisture production are balanced, meaning your skin is neither too dry nor too oily. Those with normal skin have:

  • Smooth, even texture.
  • Uniform colour and a fresh appearance.
  • No blemishes.
  • Fine pores.
  • Good blood circulation.

Dryness may become an issue as you age.

Oily: Here, the body produces too much sebum. Hormonal issues, genetics, medication, cosmetics and even stress can contribute to this overproduction. If you have oily skin, you’ll notice:

  • Visible pores.
  • A glossy appearance.
  • Acne (whiteheads and blackheads), which may appear on the back, chest and shoulders as well.

Dry: When people produce less sebum, they have dry skin. Unlike normal skin, dry skin does not provide an effective protective barrier against the elements. You can have mild, very or extremely dry skin. Symptoms include:

  • Scaling or flaking.
  • Rough texture.
  • Tight feeling.

Combination: People with combination skin have an oily “T-zone” (forehead, nose, chin) caused by sebum overproduction, but their cheeks are normal to dry. You’ll notice:

  • Symptoms associated with oily skin in the T-zone.
  • Enlarged pores in the T-zone.

Congested: Congested skin is caused by a buildup of dead skin cells. If you have this skin type, you’ll see:

  • A dull appearance.
  • Thick skin.
  • Large pores.

Call us for a consultation; we can do a free skin analysis. This confirms your skin type and helps us recommend the best products and treatments to ensure it looks and feels its best.

Dare to Bare: Treating Stretch Marks

You have a date with a special someone and want to slip on that fierce low-cut off-the-shoulder number. Or you have a date with the beach and a trashy novel and want to wear your bathing suit. Whatever your plans, don’t let stretch marks get in the way. Dare to bare!

What are Stretch Marks?

Pesky, is what they are! Stretch marks are bands or lines on your skin that look and feel different to your normal skin. They run the spectrum from light grey or silvery to bright pink or purple. They may feel raised and ridge-like or indented.

Stretch marks can make an appearance anywhere on your body, but the stomach, upper arms, breasts, thighs and buttocks are especially prone. Although not everyone is bothered by their stretch mark, some wish that they weren’t so apparent.

To what do we owe the “pleasure” of stretch marks? Well, they often appear during puberty or when teens experience growth spurts, when you gain or lose weight rapidly or during pregnancy. Corticosteroid products can contribute to the development of stretch marks, as can certain conditions like Cushing’s Syndrome or Marfan Syndrome.

While stretch marks can fade, they can linger on your skin. So if you have stretch marks you’re looking to remove, you may wonder, what are you options?

Dermapen: Dermapen is an advanced microneedling technique that utilises ultra-slim needles that do not bend or stray off course when they come into contact with the often thicker, ridged stretch marked skin. Discomfort is greatly minimised, as is downtime. The treatment induces the natural production of collagen to smooth and plump skin.

Sublative Radiofrequency: This non-aggressive technique stimulates cell regrowth without causing unnecessary trauma to the skin like some fractional laser techniques (e.g. Fraxel). The gentle heat contracts and lifts the skin, smoothing it.

Stretch marks are part of life. But that doesn’t mean you have to let them stop you from living yours to the fullest! Contact us for your consultation today.

The 101 on Birthmarks

If you’re struggling to find common ground with someone, thinking there is just nothing similar about you, well… chances are you both have birthmarks! Over 80 percent of babies are born with them, and sometimes, they don’t fade as you (and your skin) grow. So what are these little marks? And if they cause you concern, how can you remove them?

Baby, I Was Born This Way!

Birthmarks are often referred to as “irregularities” or “blemishes.” They are simply areas of discolouration that appear at or shortly after birth. What causes them? Well, folklore holds that the marks represent unmet wishes of the mother while carrying her baby. She had a craving for strawberries that went unfulfilled? Her child would have a pinkish birthmark. Thanks, Mum!

Modern science doesn’t have an exact answer for why people get them. They’re just there, and the vast majority of time, they are harmless. Many even fade away on their own. There are generally two types of birthmarks:

  • Vascular: Red, pink, or purplish in colour, these appear as a result of abnormal blood vessels under the skin.
  • Pigmented: Usually brown, these appear as a result of pigment cell clustering.

Only in relatively rare cases do birthmarks signal larger health issues. For example, a strawberry mark on the eyelid may interfere with normal vision development. Depending on the type of birthmark, however, they may be a source of concern in terms of your appearance. Port wine stains, for instance, typically appear on the face and do not fade on their own.

Birthmark Removal

Our Laser Pigmentation Removal process works to deliver a smooth, even tone to your skin. Wavelengths of light are introduced to the affected area. It works to shatter the pigments, which are then absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system.

At Premier Laser & Skin, our experienced practitioners conduct a thorough consultation to determine if laser treatment is the best option. During the procedure, you may feel a slight tingling sensation, but most clients find this completely tolerable. We apply aloe vera after to soothe the skin.

There is virtually no downtime associated with this treatment, and you can soon begin to enjoy clear, even skin. If birthmarks are troubling you, contact us straightaway.

Freckles vs. Pigmentation

If you’ve been watching the runways and magazines covers recently you will have seen models with freckles and other pigmentation conditions. Fashion houses have finally embraced more diverse models recently which is refreshing and reflective of who their customers are.

We’re seeing faces in a gorgeous spectrum of colours, and we’re also seeing more “non-traditional” looks.

While freckles and pigmentation are being embraced in the mainstream, there is often a little confusion about freckles.

Here’s what you need to know when it comes your freckles

is hyperpigmentation the same as freckles

Hyperpigmentation, melasma and freckles are skin conditions commonly appearing in both men and women. They occur when melanin is produced in skin cells which leads to dark pigmented patches or spots on the skin’s surface

Freckles are a form of hyperpigmentation. Let’s back up: what is pigmentation? It’s simply the colour of your skin. Our skin (and hair and irises) gets its colour from a pigment called melanin.

Everyone has pigmentation: people who produce more melanin have darker skin and vice-versa.

It’s natural, and the differences just make the world a more beautiful place!

(But no matter what your skin colour, protect yourself from UV rays with SPF!)

There are two types of freckle:

  • Ephelides freckles : These appear during exposure to sunlight during summer. They are usually light brown in colour and will fade by winter .
  • Lentigine freckles: These are much darker and are more permanent in nature.

Genetics

Here’s where people go astray when it comes to these little spots: they think they’re caused by sun damage. Not so. You can actually thank mum and dad for them or chromosome 4q32-q34 to be precise!. They’re genetic. They do, however, appear when the skin is exposed to the sun.

model with freckleshow to get rid of freckles permanently with laser

As mentioned, freckles are a type of hyperpigmentation. People with them produce more than enough melanin, but it does not distribute evenly across the skin. This causes the little localised areas of discolouration, fondly (or not!) known as freckles.

And those with freckles – just like those without – should always wear sun protection. This will help abnormalities from forming. But even with vigilant protection, they’ll still have freckles thanks to those genes. Laser therapy has proven to be effective for freckle removal.

laser therapy for freckles

If you’re looking to treat your freckles there are a range of solutions clinics can offer you. Before you think about any laser therapies the first step is always to get a in depth diagnosis by a skin specialists.

You can have different types of pigmentation on your body so it is important to have a thorough skin analysis before choosing a treatment.

After a diagnosis treatments could include:

Laser Pigmentation Removal:

This treatment is quick, easy and painless. A laser is applied to shatter the pigments so they can be naturally absorbed by your body’s lymphatic system.

Pigmentation Peel:

This peel speeds up the skin’s own rejuvenation process while reaching damaged surface layers and providing deep exfoliation. It delivers an even, smooth skin tone.

revlite freckle removal

RevLite laser treatment refers to the wavelength of light used to target the skin. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in freckles. The Revlite also known as PTP (PhotoAcoustic Technology Pulse), shatters the freckle pigmentation and the melanin is released to surface of the skin,. It it the shed as normal.

freckles and uv sunshineis laser treatment for pigmentation safe

Laser treatment for pigmentation is generally regarded as a safe and low risk treatment. Laser should always be used by experienced practitioners in a reputable clinic or medical practice.

The risk of scarring is low as are the side effects. As with any cosmetic treatment you should always talk over your concerns with your practitioner.

how long for freckles to fade after ipl treatment

As the laser light shatters the pigment the pigment is then naturally absorbed by your body. Your freckles which have been treated with laser may initially get darker in the first 24 hours after treatment and then slowly fade away over the next 1 to 2 weeks.

are freckles removed permanently

Results are permanent if you take care of your skin properly there should be no recurrence. If you get exposed to too much sun and  UV radiation freckles can reappear.

how effective is freckle removal?

Laser treatments are very effective for treating freckles. Complete removal can be done in one session although some people may need more then one session.

What are Milia – And What Can You Do About Them?

You have small raised white bumps on your face, around your eyelids, forehead and cheeks. They’re hard and have an obvious whitehead, so you might try to pop them like you would a pimple. But they just won’t go away. What are these little bumps (and bothers), and what can you do about them?

They’re called milia. Unlike a pimple, these are closed comedones. That is, the follicle is completely blocked, and there is a pronounced whitehead. Dead skin cells are trapped under the skin, and these little white bothers pop up.

If you want to get technical, milia are papules, as opposed to pustules, or pimples. And unlike pimples, they are neither inflamed nor red. They are not painful, itchy or harmful. What they are, though, is persistent. They just don’t go away! They may linger there for weeks or months.

Milia can co-occur with typical acne and blackheads or on their own. They can come out of nowhere or be triggered by skin injuries such as sunburns, sun damage, burns and blistering rashes.

What Can You Do?

Exfoliating regularly and avoiding heavy, cloying moisturiser can help you avoid milia. But what do you do if they’ve made an unwelcome appearance? You may be surprised. Advanced electrolysis. Our clinics are highly experienced in advanced electrolysis techniques that will help you achieve clear skin.

While typically associated with hair removal, advanced electrolysis can treat mila, as well as thread and red veins, spider naevus, skin tags, warts, blood spots, and age spots. A tiny needle (about as thin as an eyelash) is inserted into the affected area and a targeted electric current is applied. This releases the trapped bacteria, allowing your skin to heal.

Milia can be a source of embarrassment and frustration. Contact our clinic for expert assistance, so you can look and feel your best.

male Laser hair removal popularity

Laser clinics in London, once the exclusive domain for women now have more and more men coming through their doors every month as the word spreads.

With the explosion of social media and the power of influencers on platforms like Instagram who share their lifestyle, fitness and beauty regimes, more men have come to see the benefits of laser.

Whether it be on the face, beard line, chest or having the ‘back, sack and crack’ done laser hair removal can help you stay groomed and look your best for longer.

will laser works on my beard?

Laser hair removal is a quick process (no need to call off work – unless you want to!). Concentrated laser light is directed at the hair follicles to reduce regrowth. Laser can work on all skin types and tones so if you are light or dark skin laser can give you the results you are after.

Laser hair removal is not painful – it has been compared to a rubber band pinged against your skin. There is little downtime afterwards. Skin may appear red and feel like it is sunburned afterwards but this should gradually go after a few hours.

You are also advised to stay away from activities that would make you hot; like saunas , steam rooms and exercise

High factor SPF must also be worn to protect your skin which is sensitive after laser.

is laser suitable for my skin colour?

You may have heard laser does not work on darker skin tones this was the case when lasers were first invented. The modern lasers such as the Candela Gentlemax Pro that we use at Premier Laser are the Rolls Royce of the laser industry.

They are FDA approved, medical grade 4 – the same used in hospitals and use the dual wavelength of Alexandrite and Nd:YAG, which gives excellent results whatever your colour.
