What is laser hair removal?

At Premier Laser, our highly trained laser practitioners have performed over 1,000,000 treatments across 9 clinics since 2008, using the medical grade, FDA approved Candela Gentle Max Pro. The technology has dual wavelength: ND:Yag & Alexandrite which treatments all skin types (including laser hair removal for dark skin).

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal is a treatment for excess and unwanted hair using highly advanced laser technology. Treatment usually lasts between 6-8 sessions and can lead to the removal of hair without the need for waxing, shaving or plucking.

Benefits of LHR

  • Safe & effective technology: Medical grade FDA approved technology with experienced practitioners who have treated over 1,000,000 treatments on all skin types & body areas.
  • Convenient & cost effective: Laser hair removal provides long term solution in comparison to temporarily methods of hair removal such as shaving & waxing which can lead to spending more time and money in your lifetime. Laser hair removal provides optimum results in 6-8 sessions for permanent hair reduction.
  • Reduce ingrown hairs: Ingrown hairs occurs when shaved or plucked hair grows back into the skin which can cause skin infections, pain and scarring. Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle and the root resulting in the laser inhibiting the hair’s ability to grow without causing damage to the surrounding area. Even the most sensitive skin can be treated.
  • Permanent hair reduction: Say goodbye to shaving & waxing. Therefore, more people are choosing laser for hair removal. It is fast, effective, safe and a great investment in yourself with lifetime convenience.

Say goodbye to shaving & waxing

Traditional hair removal methods, such as shaving or waxing, are temporary before hair grows back thicker and stronger. This can be especially troubling with facial hair. Shaving and plucking also encourages painful ingrown hairs and can cause annoying skin irritations. That is why more people are choosing laser for hair removal.

Preparation

Before we undertake laser hair removal treatment, we always invite you to an initial consultation free of charge. The purpose of the consultation is to ask you a few questions about your health and lifestyle so that we can make sure that laser hair removal is suitable. A thorough consultation is performed for all our clients, this includes history of previous treatments, current medication, allergies, and any pigmentary problems.

We then undertake a patch test on a small area of skin in order to make sure that your skin doesn’t have any adverse effects to our laser technology. If the patch test is successful, we can then book you in for your laser hair removal treatment at a date and time of your suiting 48 hours later. Please make sure to shave prior to your patch test and the treated are 48 before your appointment.

During Treatment

After an initial consultation and patch test, 24 hours prior to your treatment, your practitioner will prepare the area you have selected for the treatment.

Prior to your actual treatment:

  • The skin is cleaned using cleanser
  • Areas are then marked with white pencil to ensure all areas are covered efficiently.
  • The cooling device will be used with the laser to cool the area during treatment
  • Protective eyewear will be worn by the client and practitioner in the treatment room during the procedure.

Once the laser machine has been prepared, the treatment head is moved over the area of skin and activated.

The average session duration of laser hair removal is from 15 – 90 minutes. This is all dependant on treatment area and spot size used based on your gender, size, and the amount of hair you wish to remove.

Aftercare

Immediately after treatment, there should be erythema (redness) and slight swelling on each hair follicle in the treatment site. The redness may last up to 2-3 days and the treated area will feel similar to sunburn for a few hours after treatment.

You can purchase soothing aloe vera gel from us to help calm the affected area post-laser treatment. This cooling gel not only cools the area but helps keep the skin moisturised and heals the lasered skin.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser treatment affects hair in the active growth phase (anagen stage). The laser beam is made up of precisely controlled pulses of energy which are absorbed by the melanin or pigment in the hair and reaches into the active hair follicles that lie beneath the skin.

The energy heats the hair, right down to the bottom of the root, safely destroying it without damaging surrounding tissue or skin.

Most people will need a course of between 6 and 8 sessions after which time the hair will be visibly reduced or permanently removed and the skin will be smooth and even.

Can men have laser hair removal?

At London Premier Laser, hair removal for men is a very popular treatment.  We can treat all male skin areas and all skin types from very light to very dark.

Can you wear fake tan when having laser hair removal?

In between your treatments fake tan can be worn as long as you remove all traces before, if it is on the area, you are having treated. The best advice is to stop applying your fake tan 7-10 days your scheduled laser sessions.

All residues must be removed as it can be dangerous to have laser with traces of fake tan present on your skin. You will run the risk of your laser session being cancelled if the fake tan is still present when you attend your clinic.

Can you wear fake tan between my laser hair removal sessions?

Yes, although if you have very dry skin and your tan takes longer to fade, leave a longer period 14+ days so all residue is completely removed.

Can you use instant or wash off tan before laser hair removal?

Yes. If using instant wash off tan you can use it no more then 2-3 days before your session, but it is not recommended the day before as all residue must be completely removed.

Can you use fake tan on the same day of my laser session?

No. Your skin must be as natural as possible. So free from tanning products as well as oils, creams, moisturisers, and lotions.
Advice on best way to remove fake tan before your session:

  • Exfoliating mitts & scrub
  • Tan eraser mitt
  • Moisturiser after exfoliating to avoid dry skin
  • Have a hot bath before exfoliating.

Pay special attention to dry, wrinkly hard to clean areas like elbows, knees, shins etc.

How can I prolong laser hair removal results?

There are a few things you can do to give yourself the best chances for long lasting success. You should try and do the following:

  • You will need more than one session (usually 6-8).
  • Set realistic expectations. No clinic can remove 100% of hair – forever.
  • Only entrust a practitioner with laser hair removal that uses top of the range medical grade lasers.
  • Find an experienced practitioner you trust and feel comfortable with and give feedback every session.
  • Be consistent and committed to your appointments.

How much hair do you lose after your first laser hair removal session?

When you attend a hair removal session, for say your underarm, only around 15% of your underarm hairs will be in the growth phase. This means only 15% of the total underarm hairs can be destroyed at that session. The laser or practitioner cannot tell which of the hairs are in the growth phase. That is why the laser will go over the whole area and several sessions are required.

Is laser hair removal for the face safe?

Laser hair removal on the face is just a safe as having laser hair removal on any other part of the body. With any laser treatment, goggles are worn by the client and practitioner for safety. Lasers used in reputable clinics are the same lasers used in hospitals and medical practices worldwide.

The Candela Gentlemax Pro is considered the best laser hair removal machine in the industry. It is medical grade and has an FDA approval. This means it has passed rigorous scientific testing and research and is safe for use for laser hair removal.

Make sure your clinic uses top of the range lasers. Clinics using unbranded cheap lasers purchased of the internet can be dangerous. To guarantee the safest laser hair removal for your face always choose a reputable clinic. Today’s modern lasers are extremely powerful, in the wrong, inexperienced hands, they may pose a risk to you. Find a reputable clinic which specialise in laser for the safest laser experience.

Can I sunbathe before or after laser hair removal?

Traditionally, our advice was previously not to sunbathe before laser hair removal. However, with the advancement in laser technologies, treatments can be made which penetrate deeper into the skin – avoiding the top layers, so sitting out in the sun in the height of summer should not be a problem before your treatment as long as you take the necessary precautions of wearing a good SPF even if you have dark skin.

If you come into your session with sunburned skin, however, your clinician may turn you away. When booking your treatments, you should inform your laser hair removal clinic if you intend on tanning and they can give you the best advice.

Lasers make your skin more sensitive to the sun and UV light – this increases your risk of burning. It can also cause hyperpigmentation which is an increase in the production of melanin, leading to dark spots or patches on your skin.

Can I use a sunbed after laser hair removal?

Avoid using sunbeds in the run up to your first laser hair removal session. Have your last sunbed session 7-10 days before your first laser session, depending on how long you are on the sunbed for. A deeper tan should see you stop 14+ days before.

Your skin may not be able to recover as easily from the treatment as you are causing extra trauma to the skin which has to heal. If using sunbeds is a regular part of your life you may find it hard being told that you should avoid them for a while.

How long you sit on the side-lines is different for everyone. It depends where you have been treated and your skin type, tone and hair. Make sure you look after your skin post-laser; it will heal quicker. Also use a good quality SPF. Have a good skin routine to keep your skin healthy and supple. This will help you get back on the sunbeds faster.

How long does laser hair removal last for dark skin?

Until recently, people with darker skin posed problems for laser technology and hair removal. Thankfully today’s lasers are more advanced than the earlier models. Modern laser hair removal technology use a much deeper wavelength called Nd:YAG which gets around any issues previously experienced. The same results can now be experienced regardless of skin tones.

Does laser hair removal work on red or ginger hair?

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in the hair (this is the dark pigment that makes skin and hair a deeper colour). Some people have more of this pigment than others, hence why some people have darker skin than others.

The issue with red and ginger hair is the fact that lasers have difficulty determining between pigments, red being one of the most difficult to see. The same goes for grey hair which is another difficult colour for the laser to spot.

Can you have laser hair removal on ears?

Yes. Ear hair removal can be done with a number of hair removal methods including waxing and hair removal creams, but nothing is effective as getting rid of your ear hair then laser.

With other methods you will have to perform them regularly too. With laser, permanent hair removal is possible. Laser light destroys the hair follicle of individual hairs so your ear hair will not grow back.
